Inside the Department

Auditions Open for Ensembles and Music Lessons

ENSEMBLES: The Department of Music hosts over 20 performing ensembles and combos ranging from choral music to jazz to mobile phones! Fall quarter is when many of our ensembles offer auditions for membership. Links to sign up for auditions can be found at the Ensembles page, as well as the Department of Music courses associated with each ensemble and contact emails for the ensemble directors and / or instructors. Ensemble participation is not limited to Music majors, but auditions are required. Some ensembles are open to community members (check the ensemble websites or instructors linked to the Ensembles page).

LESSONS: If you are new to Stanford, you will have to audition to take music lessons, regardless of whether or not you submitted a supplemental audition. Be prepared to play études, a sonata, a concerto excerpt, or anything else that demonstrates your abilities. Consult the proficiency requirements here to see if you currently play at the minimum level at which we expect students to perform. Some instrument areas have an audition link; others are simply by arrangement with the instructor. All Applied Music lessons at Stanford are subject to a lesson fee in addition to your Stanford tuition. Visit the Applied Music Fees and Policies page for more details. Contact rleigh [at] stanford.edu (subject: Lessons) (Rowen Leigh) for more information on lessons.
