Matthew Eshun is a researcher, violinist, and conductor from Ghana who is currently a PhD student in Ethnomusicology at Stanford University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Ghana, an honors degree in Violin performance, and a master’s degree in cultural musicology from the University of the Free State, South Africa.
Having performed as concertmaster and conductor in South Africa, Tanzania, and Ghana, Matthew has a keen interest in the politics and economics of identity creation through art music and popular music in post-independence Ghana. He is constantly engaged with the age-old question of the post-colonial African personality, drawing on Indigenous knowledge systems.
