Hui You

Hui (Daisy) You is a distinguished Zheng (Gu-zheng, Chinese Zither) soloist and an acclaimed Chinese music educator. Since 2004, she has been on the faculty of the Department of Music at Stanford University. She lectures Gu-zheng courses of all levels and directs the Stanford Gu-zheng Ensemble, which she founded in 2004. She currently co-chairs the United States International Music Competition and serves on the Board of Directors of the Chinese Music Teacher’s Association in Northern California. She studied with Baoquan He, Wenyan Sun, Zheng Cao, Ying Guo, Boling Ding, Yanjia Zhou, and Yuzhai Zhao. In 1987, You graduated summa cum laude with a BA degree in Zheng from the Shanghai Conservatory.

You joined the Shanghai Opera as a Zheng soloist after commencement and also won many prestigious awards, including first place in the Shanghai Spring Music Festival in 1986, Awards of Excellence in both the Chinese Instruments Contest held in Beijing in 1989 and the Zheng contest sponsored by Chinese Central TV Station (CCTV) in the same year. She released several popular solo albums featuring traditional and modern pieces.  Since her immigration to the U.S. in 1991, You has appeared as a soloist in the Ohlone Symphonic Pops Orchestra, New Music Works, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, and San Francisco World Music Festival.
