Hui You
Hui (Daisy) You is a distinguished soloist of the Zheng (Gu-zheng, Chinese Zither) and an acclaimed educator in Chinese music. Since 2004, she has held a faculty position in the Department of Music at Stanford University, where she delivers lectures on Gu-zheng courses at all proficiency levels. Additionally, she serves as the artistic director and conductor of the Stanford Gu-zheng Ensemble and Stanford Chinese Music Ensemble, both institutions she established in 2004. Since 2022, Hui has also been a faculty member in the Department of Music at UC Berkeley, teaching Gu-zheng courses. Moreover, she currently holds the positions of Artistic Director and member of the Board of Directors at the Stanford Baipu Chinese Music Group.
Hui's educational journey began at the Secondary School affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory, where she studied Zheng from 1978 to 1983. She continued her academic pursuit at the Shanghai Conservatory, specializing in Zheng and Chinese music, under the tutelage of esteemed masters Baoquan He and Wenyan Sun, renowned figures in the Nan-Bei (South-North) school. Her comprehensive training also included guidance from masters of other prominent schools, including Zheng Cao, Ying Guo, Boling Ding, Yanjia Zhou, and Yuzhai Zhao. In 1987, Hui graduated summa cum laude with a BA degree in Zheng.
Since immigrating to the United States in 1991, Hui has maintained an active and esteemed presence as a Zheng soloist. Her engagements have included performances in prominent events such as the annual "Bridge and Gate" show in the San Francisco Bay Area and participation in the China Cultural Goodwill Tour of the Hunan Arts Group, where she performed at the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas. Additionally, she has collaborated as a soloist with esteemed orchestras including the Ohlone Symphonic Pops Orchestra, the New Music Works, the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, and the San Francisco World Music Festival. Leveraging her diverse background, Hui has distinguished herself as an expert in Zheng fusion composition, skillfully integrating musical elements from various cultural traditions into this quintessential Chinese instrument. Her innovative and bold approach infuses Zheng music with a fresh, enchanting allure that resonates with audiences worldwide.
