François Rose received his Bachelor and Master degrees in composition from McGill University, and his Ph.D. from the University of California-San Diego. He also studied with Tristan Murail, at the Institut de Recherche Coordination Acoustique et Musique (IRCAM), and with Gérard Grisey at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.

His music has been performed in cities throughout Europe, Australia, North and South America. He was an award winner in the SDE/PRO Canada Composers Competition (Canada, in 1986, 1987, and 1988), in the "Kazimierz Serocki" International Composers Competition (Poland, in 1990), and in the Edvard Grieg Composers' Competition (Norway, in 2001). Besides his compositional activities, he is continuing his work on the development of a computerized orchestration aid. He is also the co-author of the Gagaku Project a website devoted to the orchestration technique in Japanese music.
