Akwasi was born in Oakland, California before moving to Richland, Washington at the age of 3. Even since before the move He has had an affinity to banging on things. During the 9th summer of his parents' futile resistance to his natural state of being, they finally gave in enrolled their son in summer steeldrum lessons. Through middle school and high school Akwasi traveled around the Pacific Northwest playing with the bands OK 2 Botay and then Bram Bratá before coming to Stanford where he continued with Cardinal Calypso. He has also participated in Panorama - the national steelpan competition in Trinidad and Tobago - with PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars on multiple occasions. He graduated January 2015 with a B.S. in Earth Systems, traveled a bit, and then returned to the Bay Area to join the Stanford Music Department as a lecturer for the Cardinal Calypso Steelpan Ensemble. Outside of his steelpan experience his interests have included guitar, bass guitar, soccer, travel, cooking, sustainability design, and community building.
