Robin Wander at Stanford Arts recently wrote about the latest of the annual visits to Avalon on Catalina Island made by members of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra (SSO) with their conductor Anna Wittstruck. In 2013, the SSO performed what was the first symphony orchestra concert in the island’s history, and they have returned every year since for concerts at the Avalon Casino Theater and more informal activities in a variety of other settings. Wittstruck says of this tradition, “This concert program is so unusual and special for the people who live in Avalon, and we are always overwhelmed and sincerely moved by how much the community appreciates our musical presence.” Special guest Chen Zhao, from the San Francisco Symphony, appeared with the SSO as violin soloist. The visiting musicians also participated in educational outreach activities at the Avalon School. | Read the full article at Stanford Arts.
