Remembering Mark Dalrymple

Mark Dalrymple (1945-2019)

Mark Dalrymple showed courage, grace, and patience during his long struggle with cancer that ended March 22nd. He was born in the Seattle area to parents George and Persis and grew up there and in Humboldt County, CA.

Mark attended Stanford University, where he earned degrees in Biology and Geology, began working as an audio engineer, and met his wife, Julie. After a brief stint in the Navy, he resumed working at Stanford for the Department of Music, Memorial Church, and the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).

The Department of Music website described him as “Audio and video recording, editing, and archiving. Techie and chief schlepper, emeritus.” He loved music and using his skills to help bring it to audiences. He also worked with other music groups, most recently the African American Composers Initiative. Other interests included growing fruit in a small home orchard, conservation, Southwestern and Northwestern Native American art, and steam trains. He was a quiet, hard-working, generous man.

He is survived by his wife Julie, sister Ruth (David), nieces Jonikka (Grant) and Rachel (Jason), three great-nieces, four great-nephews, and many friends. We thank Kaiser Santa Clara Hospice for their kind and excellent care of Mark and Sunnyvale Visiting Angels for their great help in caring for him.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 4, at 1:30 PM in the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N San Antonio Rd., Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Mark’s memory to Adopt a Native Elder (anelder.org), a group that helps Navajo seniors; the Sempervirens Fund (sempervirens.org), which protects redwood forests in the Santa Cruz mountains; or Eastside College Preparatory School (eastside.org), where students of historically underrepresented backgrounds are prepared for college.
