Department of Music bassoon lecturer Rufus Olivier, Jr., and his son Rufus David Olivier — also a bassoonist, as well as a San Francisco police officer — are highlighted in Sam Whiting's article for the June 16 San Francisco Chronicle Datebook. The elder Rufus is first bassoon for the San Francisco Opera Orchestra — currently performing Wagner's Ring cycle at the War Memorial Opera House — and his son is the first-call alternate bassoonist for the same ensemble, so they sometimes end up shoulder to shoulder in the roster.
