The Department of Music at Stanford University seeks applicants for a professorial-line, open rank position in the area of Jazz Studies and Improvisation
The successful candidate will take a leading role in developing a vision for Stanford’s jazz and improvised music program. We aim to welcome a dynamic and collaborative colleague who will ultimately assume the role of Director of Jazz Studies and Improvisation. The title and rank of the appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications of the successful applicant, but special attention will be given to early career candidates, as well as to all candidates who show clear potential to bring exceptional distinction to the program.
Stanford’s Department of Music supports a vibrant jazz community by offering courses in jazz history, theory, and instrumental instruction. We have performing ensembles such as the Stanford Jazz Orchestra, Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, and several student jazz combos. The university additionally hosts the independently-run Stanford Jazz Workshop every summer.
We are searching for a creative and innovative individual whose profile is artistic and practice-based, or a mix of scholarship and performance. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate instruction, as well as the ability for inclusive teaching and mentorship within an increasingly diverse student body comprised of individuals from a spectrum of backgrounds. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to: jazz performance, improvisation, ethnomusicology, and music technology. The successful applicant will also have interests and abilities that promote effective collaboration with a broad range of colleagues. They will participate in planning and coordinating curriculum within the Department of Music, including the development of a Jazz and Improvised Music Subplan of the Music Major.
Stanford considers jazz and improvised music as fertile ground for the study of diverse human culture. As such, the successful applicant will be expected to support the teaching and research missions of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE), African & African American Studies (AAAS), and/or the Institute for Diversity in the Arts (IDA). This includes teaching two courses each year that engage with CCSRE and contributing to various activities that promote its goals.
