Emerging String Quartet Program – Poiesis Quartet
12:30 - 2:00pm
541 Lasuen Mall, Stanford, CA 94305
Campbell Recital Hall
Poiesis Quartet performs as part of the Emerging String Quartet Program (ESQP).
Derived from ancient Greek (ποιεῖν), the word Poiesis means “to make”; specifically, to create something that has never existed before. With a focus on expanding the string quartet repertoire with vibrant new works by emerging composers, the Poiesis Quartet infuses each performance with unique moments of synchronicity and verve. An “ensemble to watch” (Hyde Park Herald), the Poiesis Quartet is the First Prize and Commission Prize winners of the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition. Read more here.
Members:
Sarah Ying Ma – violin
Max Ball – violin
Jasper de Boor – viola
Drew Dansby – cello
The ESQP provides a young ensemble opportunities similar to what the St. Lawrence String Quartet, ensemble in residence at Stanford University from 1998-2024, enjoyed in their early years through an intensive week of community outreach. The up-and-coming musicians gain valuable experience performing for varied audiences in a short period of time while the greater Stanford community benefits from the input of energy and contact with the young ensemble.
