"Black Music Revealed" with guest speaker Dr. Rosephanye Dunn-Powell

"Black Music Revealed: Black composers, performers, and themes from the 18th century to the present," a Fall 2020 seminar presented by Professor Paul Phillips, welcomes guest lecturer Dr. Rosephanye Dunn-Powell, professor, Auburn University. Her talk, viewable on Zoom (orchestra [at] stanford.edu (RSVP) required for non-Stanford attendees), will primarily focus on African-American spirituals, of which she is one of the world's leading experts.

Dr. Dunn-Powell has been hailed as one of America’s premier women composers of choral music. She has an impressive catalogue of works published by some of the nation’s leading publishers and has been commissioned yearly to compose for university choruses; professional, community and church choirs; and secondary school choruses.  Dr. Dunn-Powell’s works have been conducted and premiered by nationally-renowned choral conductors. Her compositions — sacred and secular works for mixed chorus, women’s chorus, men’s chorus, and children’s voices — are in great demand at choral festivals around the country, as well as at regional and national conventions. Dr. Dunn-Powell serves as Professor of Voice at Auburn University.
