MUSIC 157

Cardinal Calypso

Other Ensembles

Cardinal Calypso is Stanford University's premiere steelpan ensemble. They bring the music and culture of Trinidad and Tobago to the greater University community by performing both traditional Caribbean music and popular songs. From audiences of preschoolers and parents to the pan virtuosos we've invited to Stanford as guest artists, all have remarked on the group's ability to exude joy through their music, dance, and performance on steelpan. The ensemble is primarily student-run with various student leadership positions whose work is supplemented by the mentorship of the instructor, Akwasi Abrefah. A majority of the arrangements and compositions performed are by the students themselves.

Members are expected to, as a group, rehearse, play for gigs, produce two showcase performances, engage in the group's community, and enroll in the 1-unit MUSIC 157 class (0-unit option available with permission) throughout the duration of the school year. Calypso welcomes students of all ages and musical experiences. No experience is required and most of the members have never played steelpan before.

Contact instructor for audition information and/or other manners of being involved in steelpan activities.
