What is a Friend of Music at Stanford?
We’re glad you asked! For over sixty years, the Friends of Music — in its support of
Stanford’s Department of Music — has helped enhance
musical activities on campus and in the community. Your
membership support and generous contributions enable the
Friends of Music to:
- Provide individual lesson scholarships to Stanford students
in all disciplines.
- Support Stanford graduate music fellowships and
educational programs.
- Assist in funding concerts and performance tours by
departmental student ensembles.
- Provide special support to students in financial need.
- Bring music events to local community children.
- Enable visiting artists to provide master classes and
student outreach.
- Aid the Department of Music to improve its facilities for
music instruction and performance.
Beyond these tangible goals, Friends of Music is also a social
group, where people with a common love of music.
Lesson Scholarships for Stanford Students
Each year Friends of Music give out hundreds of scholarships to
help cover the costs of private music lessons for Stanford students,
both Music majors and non-majors alike. If you would like to help
us in our efforts, click on over to Stanford's secure donation server, or call (650) 723-1780.
Students may apply for a Friends of Music Applied Music Scholarship if
they meet the following criteria:
- Taking individual private lessons through the Stanford Department of Music (scholarships do not cover the costs of group lessons, nor the costs of private off-campus instruction)
- Have been accepted into an instructor's studio and are registered
for 3 units and a letter grade in the proper class and section
(students may petition to maintain scholarship eligibility while
taking lessons for fewer than three units)
- Currently enrolled Stanford student (TGR graduate students ARE
eligible)

Join Friends of Music at Stanford
Friends of Music is always looking for new members. Our members attend concerts, receptions, and special events on campus. They sponsor scholarships for students, organize special faculty showcase events, and can become truly integral parts of the life of the Department of Music.
Membership Levels and Benefits
Note: You receive all benefits up to and including your level.
- Student membership/Recent Graduates ($20) and Individuals $40
- Announcements of all Department of Music events
- Semi-annual newsletter
- New member reception and tour
- One free pair of tickets to a departmental performance*
- Invitation to our annual dinner meeting and scholarship concert
- Family/Dual membership: $60
- A second free pair of tickets to a departmental
performance*
- Soloist: $100
- Seating priority, when available
- Three free pairs of tickets to departmental performances*
- Annual donor recognition
- Invitation to special receptions, lectures and performances
- Concertmaster: $500
- Access privileges to selected courses and master classes
- Free admission to departmental concerts*
- Invitations to receptions for visiting artists and other social
events
- Donor recognition in FoM concert programs
- Maestro: $1,000
- Student concert in your home (within contiguous Peninsula area), upon request
- Personal tours of departmental resources upon request
- Virtuoso: $1,500
- Provides a full lesson scholarship for one student for the
school year. For donors at this level and above, each $1,500
donation funds an additional scholarship and can be designated
toward a particular music category. Additionally, donors can
be assigned a specific student, who will be informed of a scholarship
in your name. Please contact Elise Fujimoto for more information
about this program, which is independent of the other membership
benefits at this level.

in the mail. You will also be placed on our Concert Calendar mailing
list (we send out three concert calendars every year for Autumn,
Winter and Spring quarters). You may also elect to be on our Friends
of Music e-mail Concert Alert list.
