The Ron Alexander Memorial Lectures in Musicology

The Ron Alexander Memorial Lectures in Musicology, founded in 1991 in memory of Ronald James Alexander (1961-1990), has included a wide range of lecturers from universities around the world speaking on such diverse topics as "Music and Make-Believe," "Political Music and the Music of Politics," and "Historiographical and Musicological Research Strategies in Croatia: a Farewell to Nationalism." Each quarter a new series is offered, and lectures are open to all. Join us for in-depth discussions of music and history.

Lectures take place on Mondays at 4:15 PM, except where noted, in Braun Music Center room 103. For more information on the speakers and presentations for this year, please contact Professor Karol Berger.

Music, Aesthetics, and Society Workshop

Organized by musicology graduate students and faculty, this workshop provides a forum in which current issues in aesthetics, criticism, and interpretation are explored. It is an endeavor which fosters discussions of research themes and topics that have not been significantly developed withinÊthe musicÊdepartment, and which entails significant dialogue between musicology and other disciplines in the humanities. Each quarter, the workshop studies a selection of texts, from secondary and primary sources, which reflect these trends. Sessions are devoted to discussing materials pertinent to a topic that relates to the larger theme. In addition, presentations on related topics, by a visiting speaker and a graduate student or faculty member, are planned for each term.
